Platja de ses Covetes
COLONIA SANT JORDI
Platja de ses Covetes
Ses Covetes is located 11 km away from Campos. Locals say that its name means “little coves” in Spanish and comes from the funerary caves of talayotic period found in its surroundings.
This quiet beach, located between sa Ràpita and es Trenc, is a small, fine-grained, white sandy beach with a slight slope. It is divided into two areas: the closest to sa Ràpita with its fine sand, two hectometres long and bathers. The other one is Es Freu. A rocky area, less crowded, more picturesque and only 50 meters long.
On the rocky area began the construction of a controversial urbanization but it was stopped by judicial means. This corner now belongs to the Natural Protected Area between es Trenc and Salobrar de Campos. The nearest port facility, the Club Nàutic sa Ràpita, is located only one nautical mile away. If you arrive with a private vehicle, you can park for free in an area close to the beach, while the nearest bus stop is about 100 meters away.
A historical fact: from its quarries of marès (stones) pieces were extracted for the construction of the defensive walls of Palma. It has hot springs, already dated in Roman times, which sprout at 38ºC (100,4 °F) to alleviate dermatological and bone diseases. They are today managed by the Thermal Station of Sant Joan de la Font Santa.
