Wonderful soft sand beaches
La Colònia de Sant Jordi belongs to the municipality of Ses Salines (this name comes from the salt pans used by the Romans) and it is located southeast of the Majorcan island, among the towns of Campos and Santanyi. This town was born as a small fishing port and is nowadays a very well-known tourist area.
The coastal area of Colònia de Sant Jordi, with its small islets, its wonderful soft sand beaches and a beautiful vegetation is bathed in crystal clear waters for the delight of its visitors. This village is delimited on both sides by beaches. It has some of the most emblematic beaches of the island of Mallorca: Es Dolç and Es Carbó, extensive, with fine sand, crystalline waters and Caribbean blue color.
Colònia de Sant Jordi offers a marina from where daily excursions are organized to the nearby island of Cabrera. Here you can visit the Maritime-Terrestrial National Park of the Cabrera Archipelago.
The Cabrera National Park interpretation center is located at Colònia de Sant Jordi. In the Tourist Information Center, you get the necessary documentation for your visit to the national park, to learn about the history of Cabrera. While visiting the little island of Cabrera you wil be able to get to know all the marine and terrestrial species that live in the archipelago as well as what this little island meant for the Mediterranean culture.
In the main building of the Interpretation Center you will find a «talayot», an autochthonous megalith of the protohistory of Mallorca and Menorca.
The Salt pans of Sa Vall and of Colònia de Sant Jordi they are the second oldest in the world (4th century BC) since their exploitation was initiated by the Punic merchants. Salt pans and works continued to be the main source of interest for the Romans, Byzantines, Arabs and Christians. These salt pans explain the etymological origin of the village: Ses Salines
Its extraction is still carried out with traditional methods, during the month of August.
They constitute a fragile and valuable protected ecosystem forming a key part of the natural area of Es Trenc and Salobrar de Campos.
Yu will also find monuments of military architecture. such as: S’Estany, a fortified building of the fifteenth century, located next to the salt works; the watch tower of the 14th century of S’Avall and the fortified building Tower of Ca’n Barbarà, next to the Parroquial church.
